National Headlines Schwarzenegger Tours Wildfire Burning In Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is keeping close tabs on all the wildfires burning in the state. Today, he was in Santa Barbara at the Gap Fire which is now the top priority in California. More than 18-hundred residents have been evacuated and hundreds more may receive the order to leave. Statewide, more than 17-hundred fires are still burning, with just over 80-percent of them contained. The fires have destroyed 520-thousand acres along with 67 structures. In Arizona, the Lane 2 fire is now 50-percent contained and residents who had been evacuated are now being allowed to return home. The fire burned more than 10-thousand acres.
Fireworks May Be To Blame For Ohio Apartment Fire (Toledo, OH) -- Arson investigators believe fireworks may be the cause of a fire that destroyed as many as 12 buildings of an apartment complex in Toledo, Ohio. More than 100 people have been left homeless. The blaze caused an estimated 11-million dollars in damage. Witnesses say someone may have been shooting off fireworks before the fire started. The city of Toledo is trying to find hotels for the fire victims, but most rooms are booked because of a golf tournament.
Mississippi River Back Open For Traffic (Chicago, IL) -- For the past month, the Mississippi River has been closed because of severe flooding in the Midwest. The river has now been reopened for traffic. Water levels are dropping, but remain above flood stage following the worst flooding in the region in 15 years.
During the height of the floods, almost 300 miles of the Mississippi River were shut off to barge traffic.
South Koreans Have A Beef With U.S. Meat Deal (Seoul) -- About 50-thousand people protested in Seoul, South Korea today against a U.S. beef import deal and the policies of their new president. There were no major incidents of violence during the protest. Polls show most South Koreans opposed the deal President Lee Myung-bak reached in April to open the market to American beef. However, nearly two-thirds of those surveyed say it's time to stop the protests which have become more violent in recent weeks. The protests started two months ago over concerns about possible mad cow disease in U.S. beef.
Local Headlines July Fourth Festivities Interrupted For Some (Undated) -- Even though the forecast was threatening, Mother Nature pushed through the rain in most of the area to allow Independence Day festivities to proceed as planned. Baltimore's fireworks display went off as planned in front of a large crowd at the Inner Harbor. Displays were also held as scheduled in most of the western portion of the state. Late storms did cause some adjustments to the festivities on the Eastern Shore. The threat of storms caused Ocean City officials to push their fireworks up an hour to 8:30, making for a smaller than anticipated crowd. Fire Marshals delayed the planned display at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury due to high winds, and the town of Laurel, Delaware postponed their event until this evening.
Virginia Woman Injured In Anne Arundel Boat Explosion (Edgewater, MD) -- A Virginia woman was taken to the hospital yesterday afternoon when the boat she was on exploded in the waters off the Selby Bay Yacht Club in Anne Arundel County. Elizabeth Spence of Alexander was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after the 35-foot boat suffered an explosion and caught fire. A fire spokesman told WBAL TV that the vessel was having mechanical problems and exploded when it was put into neutral. The boat eventually caught fire and sank under 17 feet of water.
